From Future Classic, the iconic Australian indie dance label and home to recent ascending talents Flume and Flight Facilities, comes their newest signing – Sydney quintet Panama.
Panama first made themselves known with acclaimed debut single ‘Magic’, which was accompanied by remixes from disco deviants Midnight Magic and Gavin Russom. Their debut ‘It’s Not Over’ EP picks up on that bright promise while expanding it’s palette with six tracks that are equally awash with intoxicating rhythm as they are detailed with personal, reflective hues. The EP will also be accompanied by a special ‘It’s Not Over’ 12″ release featuring a stellar cast of remixes of the track from Kölsch, Ejeca and Dave DK / Ewan Pearson.
Panama is the project of Jarrah McCleary, a classically trained pianist from the age of six, who grew up in the sticky heat of Australia’s Northern Territory. His previous project, The Dirty Secrets saw the band work between London and Australia with producer and engineer, Nick Terry (Klaxons, Libertines).
The EP was recorded in Los Angeles with super producer Eric Broucek, of DFA Records fame (Holy Ghost, LCD Soundsystem) and assisted on the rhythm section by Jim Orso (Holy Ghost, Hot Chip) on drums.
Steeped in splashes of yacht rock, hopeful house music and an avid appreciation for the ’80s, Panama make music that is brimming with a quiet, golden nostalgia as it is shimmering and anthemic in its delivery. Channeling the likes of Peter Gabriel alongside nods to fellow Australian dance floor residents Cut Copy and Van She, the six-track EP is a 2012 staple for any discerning listener.
Recorded in the city where dreams are made, Panama’s ‘It’s Not Over’ EP glows with the airborne optimism of exciting new possibilities and provides a clear statement of intent that the ascension of this Sydney quartet has only just begun.
